The plastic tube was more resiliant than the end cap (the pen tip) which just came right off. Anyway, I found some refills that do work and won't stain me.

Note to others, if you buy a Render K pen, G2 ink cartidges fit snugly in the pen body, and need pliers (while standing outside) to take them out nicely.
